February 2010: It's been awhile since we've updated the site, so we did a massive scrub, updating details throughout, including inventory sizes for various game systems for Gamesenders, etc. Again, we don't expect many changes with only two major companies to track, but feel free to email us with any info that merits an update to our reviews,
September 2009: Back to school, but nothing to report in the DVD and rental realm as yet.
August 2009: We're in the darkest hour of DVD rental activity in Ireland--not surprising as everyone is either outside soaking up the sun or abroad this time of year--but rest assured as the cold returns, which it must, we'll still be analyzing the Irish DVD and game rental market.
July 2009: No changes to the site for July.
June 2009: Again, nothing new to pass on this month.
May 2009: Nothing new to pass on in the world of Irish game and DVD rental--but then with only two companies left standing to review (Screenclick and Gamesenders), we don't expect there will be that much to pass on most months unfortunately...
April 2009: Nothing new to pass on this month, not after the major updates to content and design of March.
March 2009: We've just completed a redesign of our website, widening every page from 800 to 1,000 pixels. Our tracking shows that only 3% of visitors have a monitor with under 1,000 pixels, so we felt it was a good time to upgrade. This allows us to include extras like a sidebar beside our main table with definitions for the fields in the table. We can also use some larger fonts, larger screenshots of the various sites we review, etc. and hope the site is more functional and more modern looking as a result.
We also did a major site update, checking all the sites, updating DVD, Blu-ray, and game inventory numbers by console, and generally adding new info.
Our new blog is also going well. We've backdated all our site updates listed below, and have added some stories of interest for Irish DVD rental, and also what's going in in DVD rental in other countries--trends which may filter to us here, like Netflix's latest innovations in the US, or those of Lovefilm in the UK.
February 2009: Alas, Moviestar is no more, it has been gobbled up by Screenclick, which now is the only major online DVD rental provider in Ireland. Existing customers will stay on their old tariffs and continue to send discs back to the same address for now, but Screenclick as an independent entity has ceased to exist. GameSenders remains the only game rental service.
As these two companies dominate their respective markets with no competition, it may seem there is no use for a consumer guide like ours, but we'll keep monitoring the industry, putting forward the latest special offers (like GameSenders' current 30-day free trial) and generally putting information out there so the public can make the best decision.
January 2009: Little new to report as yet in the new year, but we'll continue to watch the Irish DVD market closely. One big surprise in the realm of game rental is GameSenders has launched a 30-day free trial--we're not sure how long this will last, so we'd take advantage of it while you can.
Happy renting in 2009!
1 September 2008: We've completed a major site update, verifying the companies inventories, prices, and such. We've added Blu-ray titles (only Moviestar has them at present to our surprise), and we counted up the games available for each console for Ireland's only game rental site, GameSenders.
1 August 2008: The smallest Irish DVD rental service, Busy Bee, has gone out of business, leaving Screenclick and upstart Moviestar to duke it out for supremacy. Both are excellent choices, and we'll continue to help customers make an informed decision.
1 April 2008: Nothing new to report on the online rental scene for April Fools Day.
1 January 2008: Nothing much to report, but we look forward to tracking further competition in the online DVD rental market in the coming year.
1 November 2007: We've done our first major update, and in particular, noted the Screenclick price cuts, two euros off their 1 and 2 disc packages and a full three euros off the 3 and 4 disc packages--this puts the just below rival Moviestar which was previously one euro cheaper; clearly competition and choice is good for the consumer.
1 April 2007: No, it's not an April Fool's trick--we launched Ireland-DVD-Rental-Guide.com as a resource providing information and customer comments on the (currently 3) Irish DVD rental sites We plan on making monthly updates as needed, and will note the changes in this What's New section. Please email us if you notice any discrepancies, and we'll fix them.
Happy Renting!
